This time last year...

This time last year, I was sent to Chuck's "Redline Chopper School" in rural Ohio.

If you've ever seen Chuck's ad in our magazine, maybe you've wondered what the "school" was like. Well it wasn't very "school" like at all. It felt more like a couple of guys standing around in a sub-zero barn out in the sticks of southern Ohio for a week. No heat (it was below zero every day!) and no running water.

Altho taking apart an evo motor all the way down to the crank pin was pretty cool. It felt sort of good, sort of empty to know its not your engine. On one hand, you know if you mess up, it won't be explodin' into a million pieces under your ass on the freeway, or on your dime. But at the same time, you'll have just rebuilt an evo motor, and never get to ride it out of the garage. Trades off galore, indeed.

one thing I will make note of is this: Chuck's class had no running water. nor heat. and it was in the middle of winter, out in the sticks of Ohio...

one night after class, Doug (the young guy in the photos) and I went to a wings joint that was across the street from the motel. For some reason, the extra hot hot wings sounded good, as did a hand full of beers. This was all well and dandy, till the next morning came.

Drove all the way out to Chuck's barn, which was about a solid 10 minute drive from the nearest gas station (shitter), and felt the closest i've ever been to exploding. My insides were turning every which way, and a toilet was no where to be found.

Scariest ride of my life, flying down ice slicked country roads hurdeling towards a gas station in the middle of no where. I felt bad for whom ever had to clean up that toilet after that, it was horrific.

But all in all, it was a good time to build a bike in a week and see how the motor all goes together. Good experience, just next time maybe i'll be rebuilding an evo of my own!
